A very nice painting by Alma-Tadema celebrating education. As we learn from Bill Bryson's "At Home"--the English love education. They love their history, their language and their geography. In a telling story, the rural Anglican preachers in the 1700s found that they had plenty of money and a great deal of extra time on their hands. What did they do? They became scientists and made some of the most-revolutionary discoveries in the history of humanity. These self-educated scientists then had children who were just as equally awesome or even more so, e.g. Jane Austen.
