Ghirlandaio ran the one of the West's greatest studios in Florence.  In fact, he would be Michelangelo's first formal instructor.  In this portrait, all the goals of Middle Renaissance portraiture can be seen, upon which Leonardo would capitalize in his career--climaxing in his Mona Lisa c. 1501.
